Ipswich Revisited now available! Second book in Images of America series

The Ipswich Historical Society is pleased to announce the publication of Ipswich Revisited, a collection of over 200 photographic images with extensive captions. Written by Bill Varrell for the Society and published by Arcadia, (the publisher of Varrell's 2001 title, Ipswich), the book covers the period of the late 1800s through the 1950s. Varrell, a trustee of the Society, generously contributed his vast knowledge of local history to compile the book, poring over the Society's photograph collection for months and tracking down private collections of former and present Ipswich residents.

Highlights include an opening section on the Ipswich River with fascinating aerial views and scenes of mills and boatshops; photographs of bygone buildings including the Ipswich lighthouse; rarely seen interior views of familiar edifices; and notable natives, such as the Appleton family, artists Arthur Wesley Dow and Carl Nordstrom, and Native American princess Emma Safford.

Since Ipswich's founding in 1634, the town has been home to farmers and fishermen, sea captains and furniture makers, and mill workers and clammers. Wealthy summer residents, artists, and photographers discovered Ipswich years later, capturing in photographs the town's rural landscapes, magnificent beaches, modest streetscapes, busy waterfront, local celebrations, and personalities.

Ipswich Revisited is a unique historical resource and a wonderful gift for those of you who have a special place for Ipswich in your heart.
